Rapid AI content scaling can drive short-term organic growth but often leads to sharp traffic crashes after Google updates.

Content production

Reader Note:
This is the one part of the piece where Lily Ray did her own analysis: she read public case studies published by AI content tools and cross-referenced the clients' traffic afterwards, finding roughly 30 examples of the same shape. Three are shown as Ahrefs charts, with declines landing a few months after publication — one at the June 2025 core update. Lily Ray states two caveats herself: these are third-party Ahrefs estimates rather than first-party data, and publishing the case study may itself have been what drew the scrutiny. A timing coincidence across 30 cases is a pattern worth knowing and not a demonstration that the content caused the fall.
Evidence:
Expert judgment
Vendor interest:
Moderate — This comes from a company with a commercial interest in this market, so it is not a neutral source.
Sample:
A commentary article drawing on public case studies, selected company traffic examples, Microsoft security research, Similarweb trend data, and the author's review of roughly 30 case studies from AI content tool companies.

Good for

Hearing how someone who knows the field reads it, and deciding what to check yourself.

Not for

  • Anything that needs a measurement. Nobody counted or tested this.
  • This comes from a company with a commercial interest in this market, so it is not a neutral source.
  • The source talks about this as cause and effect — that is its reading, not a finding.
  • The source says how much it looked at, but not how any of it was chosen.
