Average CPC of keywords with vs without AI Overviews and uplift percentage, by industry

Reader Note:
The six industries where clicks are cheaper with an AI Overview run from −19.26% in Internet & telecom to −45.79% in Hobbies & leisure, so the cheaper side is both the more common one and, at its extreme, the larger gap. This is the card to read before the two industry cards that show the opposite: the direction differs by industry rather than pointing one way. Which keywords carry an AI Overview is Google's choice, and it leans towards research-heavy queries, so part of what these differences describe is which keywords Google picked. The article's text and its chart print different click prices for Jobs & education and Finance; the figures used here follow the chart.

Good for

Comparing yourself against a similar segment, and choosing what to test next.

Not for

  • Saying that one thing caused another, or predicting what you would get.
  • This comes from a company with a commercial interest in this market, so it is not a neutral source.
  • This is an aggregated or average number that covers very different cases. Real results in a particular segment may differ.
  • Nobody counted this directly — it's a calculation. The publisher worked it out itself, or took the ad platform's word for what its ads achieved.
