AI citations only drive traffic when the cited page gives readers a clear next step
Optimisation methods
- Reader Note:
- This is Semrush's explanation, not something the data measures. What the data shows is a mismatch: Grainger, made-in-china.com and rsc.org draw more AI traffic than reference sites with far higher citation counts. Why — a product to buy, original research to read — is the report's reading of it. The citation counts and the traffic figures also come from two different Semrush datasets, matched by domain rather than measured together.
- Evidence:
- Observed behaviour
- Vendor interest:
- High — This comes from a company with a commercial interest in this market, so it is not a neutral source.
- Sample:
- Three Semrush datasets: 458 manufacturing keywords tracked monthly from January to July 2026; U.S. clickstream sessions across sites in ten manufacturing categories over the same period; and Semrush AI Visibility data for U.S. manufacturing/industrial domains across ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Mode, and AI Overviews, using monthly top-25 domains by mentions and by citations.
Good for
Comparing yourself against a similar segment, and choosing what to test next.
Not for
- Saying that one thing caused another, or predicting what you would get.
- This comes from a company with a commercial interest in this market, so it is not a neutral source.
- This was measured in one market. It may not hold where you are.
- The source talks about this as cause and effect — that is its reading, not a finding.
- Nobody counted this directly — it's a calculation. The publisher worked it out itself, or took the ad platform's word for what its ads achieved.
