Spearman rank correlation between Reddit brand consensus and AI brand recommendations by category
- Reader Note:
- The score compares how Reddit ranks brands with how ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini rank them, from 0 (no match) to 1 (identical order). It is based on 65 brands that appeared in both Reddit discussions and AI answers, drawn from r/MechanicalKeyboards, r/StandingDesk and r/homeoffice. Office and workspace was the highest of 12 consumer categories; the average was 0.554 and the lowest was tools and home improvement at 0.401. The brand list was built from AI answers; with an independent list, the score was 0.683. This is an observational, not peer-reviewed preprint from an AI consultancy, so it shows alignment, not cause.
- Evidence:
- Observed behaviour
- Vendor interest:
- Low
- Sample:
- Reddit corpus of 12,187 unique posts and 103,696 comments from 60 subreddits across 20 categories; AI side used 50 product recommendation queries across 4 platforms, each run 3 times, plus 15 API queries and 100 web UI queries for citation testing.
Good for
Comparing yourself against a similar segment, and choosing what to test next.
Not for
- Saying that one thing caused another, or predicting what you would get.
- Nobody counted this directly — it's a calculation. The publisher worked it out itself, or took the ad platform's word for what its ads achieved.
- The source says how much it looked at, but not how any of it was chosen.
