99.2% of US keywords that trigger AI Overviews are informational in intent
Keyword & topic research
99.2%
Share of keywords triggering AI Overviews that are informational, not transactional or navigational
- Reader Note:
- This figure is borrowed from an earlier Ahrefs analysis and does not come from this study's own dataset or period, so it should not be read as a finding of the click-loss study it sits inside. Which keywords count as informational is Ahrefs' own intent classification, and that classification is what the 99.2% measures. A figure this close to 100% leaves almost no room for the commercial and transactional keywords other studies find AI Overviews on, which is worth holding against it.
- Evidence:
- Observed behaviour
- Vendor interest:
- Moderate — This comes from a company with a commercial interest in this market, so it is not a neutral source.
- Sample:
- 300,000 keywords pulled from Ahrefs' Keywords Explorer database: 150,000 keywords that trigger an AI Overview and 150,000 similar informational-intent keywords without an AI Overview. Click-through rate data came from aggregated Google Search Console data (desktop) for each keyword, compared between March 2024 and March 2025.
Good for
Comparing yourself against a similar segment, and choosing what to test next.
Not for
- Saying that one thing caused another, or predicting what you would get.
- This comes from a company with a commercial interest in this market, so it is not a neutral source.
- This is an aggregated or average number that covers very different cases. Real results in a particular segment may differ.
- The source never says how this number was measured.
