Brand Overlap Between Reddit Discussions and AI Recommendations by Category

Reader Note:
This figure covers 12 consumer product categories from a Reddit corpus of 12,187 posts and 103,696 comments, compared against AI recommendations from ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini across 50 product recommendation queries asked three times each. The overlap rate is the share of total unique brands in a category that appeared in both Reddit discussions and AI recommendations. The report’s primary brand list was built from AI answers, so overlap depends partly on an AI-derived dictionary.

Reddit corpus of 12,187 unique posts and 103,696 comments from 60 subreddits across 20 categories; AI side used 50 product recommendation queries across 4 platforms, each run 3 times, plus 15 API queries and 100 web UI queries for citation testing.

Good for

Comparing yourself against a similar segment, and choosing what to test next.

Not for

  • Saying that one thing caused another, or predicting what you would get.
  • Nobody counted this directly — it's a calculation. The publisher worked it out itself, or took the ad platform's word for what its ads achieved.
  • The source says how much it looked at, but not how any of it was chosen.
