Brands Reddit communities rate highest tend to be the ones AI chatbots recommend most — average rank correlation of 0.554 across 12 consumer product categories
Entity & brand presence
- Reader Note:
- The author collected 12,187 Reddit posts and 103,696 comments from 60 subreddits and ranked brands by how much they were discussed, weighted by upvotes. That ranking was compared with brands recommended by ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini across 50 product questions, each asked three times. The score runs from 0 (no match) to 1 (identical order); 0.554 is the average across categories, and all 12 were statistically significant. The match held after accounting for brand popularity via Google Trends. One caveat: the brand list used for Reddit was built from AI answers. With a list built independently, the average fell to 0.430 and stayed significant in 7 of 12 categories. This is an observational, not peer-reviewed preprint from an AI consultancy, so it shows alignment, not that Reddit caused the AI recommendations.

- Sample:
- Reddit corpus of 12,187 unique posts and 103,696 comments from 60 subreddits across 20 categories; AI side used 50 product recommendation queries across 4 platforms, each run 3 times, plus 15 API queries and 100 web UI queries for citation testing.
Good for
Comparing yourself against a similar segment, and choosing what to test next.
Not for
- Saying that one thing caused another, or predicting what you would get.
- Nobody counted this directly — it's a calculation. The publisher worked it out itself, or took the ad platform's word for what its ads achieved.
- The source talks about this as cause and effect — that is its reading, not a finding.
- The source says how much it looked at, but not how any of it was chosen.
