Nearly 90% of third-party AI citations come from listicles, comparisons and review sites, and 80% of cited brands sit in the first three positions on those pages
Entity & brand presence
90%
of third-party citations in AI answers come from listicles, comparisons and review sites
- Reader Note:
- Drawn from AirOps' analysis of more than 21,000 brands, with sampling and prompt design not disclosed. The two halves say different things and the second is the sharper one: being cited at all is largely a matter of appearing on listicles, comparisons and review sites, but among brands that are cited, position on the page still decides — four in five sit in the top three. So this reads as a ranking problem on third-party pages rather than a presence problem.
- Evidence:
- Observed behaviour
- Vendor interest:
- High — This comes from a company with a commercial interest in this market, so it is not a neutral source.
- Sample:
- Mixed source. AirOps references analyses of more than 12,000 pages, more than 21,000 brands, and 5.5 million AI answers, plus outside surveys and customer examples. Selection and detailed methodology are not disclosed on this page.
Good for
Comparing yourself against a similar segment, and choosing what to test next.
Not for
- Saying that one thing caused another, or predicting what you would get.
- This comes from a company with a commercial interest in this market, so it is not a neutral source.
- This is an aggregated or average number that covers very different cases. Real results in a particular segment may differ.
- The source never says how this number was measured.
- The source says how much it looked at, but not how any of it was chosen.
