Summary:
"The State of Ecommerce 2026" is a co-branded report by Similarweb (a web/app traffic intelligence vendor) and Statista, pitched as an "enterprise blueprint" for ecommerce strategy.
It combines Similarweb's estimated web/app traffic and engagement data with Statista's consumer survey research.
Three chapters:
(1) "When AI Enters the Journey" — how AI assistants and search are reshaping discovery, consideration and downstream purchase influence;
(2) "Ecommerce Signals: Global Trajectory & Sector Dynamics" — traffic/growth benchmarks across five sectors (Marketplaces, Beauty & Cosmetics, Consumer Electronics, Fashion & Apparel, Home & Garden);
(3) "What Comes Next by Statista" — macro ecommerce revenue forecasts, demographic/agentic-commerce readiness, and consumer trust/privacy attitudes.
Similarweb draws on four data streams:
(1) Consumer research: proprietary market research fielded July 2026 on consumer attitudes, shopping behaviors and AI usage;
(2) Ecommerce and retail performance data: transactional/marketplace data covering traffic, rankings, pricing, assortment and conversion;
(3) Web and app traffic insights: Similarweb's own digital intelligence platform tracking engagement across sites and apps;
(4) Custom backend analysis: advanced data modelling and proprietary queries built on Similarweb's Clickstream data.
Statista contributes two methodologies:
• Consumer Insights (two surveys, Global and Pulse, ages 18-64, fielded in US/UK/Germany — respondent counts in Sample description)
• Market Insights (bottom-up modelling using historical ARPU adjusted by country- and segment-specific drivers, not survey-based).
Similarweb states plainly that all of its data in the report are "estimations and extrapolations based on source materials obtained from third parties" and are "not warranted for accuracy or completeness".
